Why Washington?

Discover our hidden gem...
One of the “The Prettiest Small Towns in Georgia” according to Southern Living magazine. One visit is not enough to discover our rich history, architectural styles, outdoor activities, and so much more.
Wilkes County, the first county in Georgia formed under the Georgia Constitution of 1777, was named for British Parliamentarian and American Independence supporter John Wilkes. Washington, incorporated in 1780, was the first city in our country named for General George Washington.
On February 14, 1779, American Patriot soldiers defeated the British in the Battle of Kettle Creek, just a few miles outside Downtown. This battle was the only Patriot victory in the state of Georgia during the Revolutionary War. Today, you can breathe in the fresh air while hiking the marked trails at this sacred, historic battlefield.
While no American Civil War battles were fought in Washington, Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, met with his Cabinet for the final time at the Georgia Branch Bank Building, then known as the Heard House. The Confederate Government dissolved here in Downtown Washington, GA. This dissolution was also the last time the infamous Confederate gold was tracked...but never found.
Outdoor activities include hiking, camping, kayaking on the Little River Water Trail, hunting, or biking down scenic tree-lined streets surrounded by history, just to name a few.
In and around our historic downtown, you’ll find museums, boutique shops, and delicious dining choices. Should you want to stay longer, consider The Fitzpatrick Hotel, constructed in 1898, beautifully restored, which sits regally on our Town Square.
